Guide picked us up and first went down into the old town centre for a walk around. Lots of derelict buildings. Some grand old buildings. After military rule governments now have a heritage fund to improve over time. Sampled some betel leaf!!!! Then on to circular train which showed the worst side of the city. Not worth doing. Got off and walked through a local market which was really interesting. Then on to a Myanmar restraunt where a wide selection of foods were available with copious rice dishes. All very good and very cheap.

Then across the river by local ferry. Stunning to see the locals and life going on. You could people watch all day. Bit like India.

Visit to township on other side where effectively the poor live. Trishaw for abt 2 hours. Interesting and effective in showing the problems of the country. Stopped at tea house, candle making and bread making. The conditions for workers, including the bosses, were horrendous. Definite third world. Back to ferry and hotel after what was an invigorating and sobering day.
